Colossal Long Ring Timer Review

This is a great visual timer that has a bell loudly. Chirp not a little 'noise that you can not hear. You can hear and see this timer. And 'what it is. A great second half. It is made of plastic and only time for one hour, but if it's something big and strong that the timer. Can be hung on a wall or placed on a bench. I like it. I see it from anywhere in the room.
Colossal Long Ring Timer Overview
The Colassal face is a full 9 inches in diameter, with tactual numbers that are 1 inch high. Every five minute interval is marked with a raised line, and it has the longest ring of any timer we've seen anywhere. It can be mounted on a wall, rest flat on a table or kitchen counter and can stand upright on its own detachable base. Use it anywhere - we've built in everything but the kitchen sink, but this timer's not just for use in the kitchen. # 790791

Jimson Weed - Uses and Side Effects
Jimson weed is most commonly used as dried leaves, with or without tips of flowering branches. The ripe seeds and flowers without leaves are also used. Seeds are small, long, flat, and dark yellow to brown. Jimson weed's primary action isanticholinergic, caused by 0.1 % to 0.6% atropine, hyoscyamine, and scopolamine. All parts of the plant contain these compounds, but the highest concentration is in the seeds. Anticholinergic levels in other plant parts vary from year to year and from plant to plant. The alkaloids are readily absorbed across GI mucous membranes and across the respiratory tract. Anticholinergic effects usually occur within 60 minutes and may last 24 to 48 hours because of impaired GI motility.
Safety Risk Jimson weed is listed as an unsafe herb by FDA. It isn't recommended for routine therapeutic use.
Reported uses
Jimson weed is used to treat asthma and cough from bronchitis or influenza, usually by smoking cigarettes made from the leaves. It's also used to treat disorders of the autonomic nervous system. Little data exist to support routine therapeutic use of jimson weed.
Illicitly, the seeds have been chewed, the leaves smoked as cigarettes, and a tea brewed and ingested to cause hallucinations and euphoria.
Administration
Dosage and administration aren't well documented.
Hazards
Adverse reactions to jimson weed include headache, confusion, hallucinations, agitation, emotional lability, motor incoordination, restlessness, loss of consciousness, hyperthermia, tachycardia, dilated pupils, blurred vision, photophobia, dry mucous membranes, nausea, vomiting, decreased GI tract motility, dry mouth, urinary retention, tachypnea, dry, flushed skin, and hypertension leading to hypotension.
Additive effects may be seen with anticholinergics such as benzotropine, atropine, scopolamine; with antihistamines such as diphenhydramine; with phenothiazines such as prochlorperazine and promethazine; and with tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline and imipramine. Use of jimson weed with deadly nightshade (belladonna) may cause additive anticholinergic toxicity.
Patients who are pregnant or breast-feeding should avoid use. Those with glaucoma, benign prostatic hyperplasia, urinary retention, tachycardia, or hypersensitivity to jimson weed should also avoid use.
Safety Risk Jimson weed has been associated with seizures, arrhythmias, respiratory depression, and respiratory arrest. Fatal poisonings resulting from respiratory depression and circulatory collapse have been reported from adult doses equal to 10 mg of atropine (15 to 100 g of dried leaves or about 100 [15 to 25 g) of seeds). Fatal doses in children may be much smaller. Fatalities also reported with ingestion of brewed tea.
Clinical considerations
Warn patient that jimson weed isn't recommended for routine therapeutic use.
Don't confuse jimson weed with deadly nightshade (Atropa belladonna), which has similar effects.
Tell patient to report signs and symptoms of anticholinergic toxicity: dilated pupils, impaired vision, dry mouth, heart palpitations, dizziness, confusion, hallucinations, and incoordination.
The antidote for anticholinergic toxicity is physostigmine. To avoid profound cholinergic effects, use it only for severe toxicity, including seizures, severe hypertension, severe hallucinations, life-threatening respiratory depression, or arrhythmias. Avoid using sedatives or phenothiazines to treat toxicity because they may have additive anticholinergic effects.
Advise patient to keep jimson weed away from children and pets.
Tell patient to notify pharmacist of any herbal and dietary supplements that he is taking when obtaining a new prescription.
Advise patient to consult his health care provider before using an herbal preparation because a conventional treatment with proven efficacy may be available.
Research summary
Jimson weed is listed as an unsafe herb by the FDA. It isn't recommended for routine therapeutic use.

Life Improves at 60
After I turned 60, an unexpected event occurred that inspired me to write this article. Since the age of 10, I had worn contact lenses to correct for my extreme nearsightedness.
But in the last few years, that solution had begun to work less well. After turning 56, I found myself wearing reading glasses a good bit of the time to do my work. I developed glaucoma about the same time and had to use eye drops that left my eyes sore, swollen, and dry.
Contact lens wearing became increasingly difficult. By the evening, I would just take out my lenses and read without glasses or contact lenses by pressing the book up against my nose. I was heading back to where I was at age 9 before anyone knew I couldn't see very well.
When I was 59, I remembered that my mother had promised me as an 11-year-old that someday I wouldn't have to use anything to correct my vision. I thought I might have glimpsed the fulfillment of her promise a few days later while watching Tiger Woods play golf at a local tournament.
The great golfer had had laser surgery to correct his vision a few years earlier. I was startled to see him staring steely-eyed at the flags while strong winds blinded me with dirt that interfered with my contact lenses.
At my next eye appointment, I asked my delightful ophthalmologist, Dr. Miriam Dougherty, if someone with glaucoma could have laser surgery for vision correction. She said sure and recommended I see one of the top laser surgeons in the country, Dr. Peter Rapoza.
I was delighted to hear the news and even happier when Dr. Rapoza's assistant informed me that the first visit was free to check to see if I was a good candidate for the surgery. Dr. Rapoza was a tall, distinguished-looking man who somewhat resembled the actor George Clooney. He obviously liked people and did everything he could to be kind and helpful. You feel comfortable in his presence no matter what he has to tell you.
Peter had good and bad news for me. I could certainly use the laser surgery to improve my vision, but I also had cataracts that were so bad they should be immediately removed. He recommended that I have cataract surgery and later follow up with laser surgery if anything wasn't visually perfect after the cataracts were gone.
He explained that during cataract surgery a new lens is implanted in each eye that corrects distance vision and many people find that solution avoids the need for laser corrections. I subsequently had both eyes operated on and unexpectedly ended up with the best vision of my life.
I could now see 20/20 (or with average vision) at a distance. My near vision improved so much that for most close-up tasks I could see better without reading glasses than with them. It was better than being physically reborn in a way . . . except with improvements.
With cataracts everything is dark and yellow. After the surgeries I could see that snow was still white, whereas before the surgeries I had been very concerned about the way pollution had made snow so yellow! In addition, night lights previously blurred everything into a big amorphous halo.
Now I could see unlit objects quite clearly with only starlight to help me. I woke up every day to see everything perfectly. That had never happened before in my life.
This astonishing personal experience taught me that progress can occur faster than even optimists realize. In my lifetime, technology improvements had taken me from being a virtually blind person to someone who has almost flawless vision at age 60 without any personal effort.
Let me talk about optimism for a moment. Researchers have observed that optimists often accomplish more than realists and pessimists. Why? Optimists try more things and stick to their efforts longer. The realist or pessimist often stops short of trying or trying again, just at the brink of success.
But it's not enough just to be an optimist. You need to do something based on your optimism. Optimists who never do anything except expect the best results are often referred to as day dreamers. Extreme optimists who think about what's maybe over the rainbow are often dismissed as crackpots, or worse.
I'm a different kind of optimist: an intensely practical one. I want to see results . . . and soon. I'm impatient. I do everything fast and wish I could go faster: There is so much that needs to be done that most people ignore.
That's one reason I was so impressed by my experience with cataract surgery; here was practical progress that helped me tremendously and happened on its own. Wouldn't it be great if great improvements in all kinds of areas I care about occurred without my effort?

Health Benefits Of Vitamin E
Vitamin E, also called alpha-tocopherol, is believed to reduce plaque buildup and preliminary research has led to beliefs that it may help delay coronary heart disease by limiting the oxidation of cholesterol. It may also help prevent the formation of blood clots which may eventually lead to heart attacks. Aside from this, Vitamin E's health benefits include faster wound healing, skin enhancement, the proper functioning of the immune system and protection against various diseases.
Although an essential nutrient, Vitamin E deficiency is less likely to occur except in individuals with rare fat metabolism disorders. The most abundant food sources are vegetable oil. It is found commonly in wheat products, nuts, and poultry. Vitamin E supplements are also available commercially.
The main function of Vitamin E is similar to that of an antioxidant. It helps remove free radicals, which are unstable compounds responsible for damaging cell structure. The buildup of free radicals may increase the risk of cancer and weakens the immune system. Vitamin E also helps protect the eyes from diseases like cataract and glaucoma. Diabetes, pancreatic disorders, and Alzheimer's Disease are just a few of the diseases that Vitamin E is used for.
Vitamin E may prevent and limit the oxidation of cholesterol. Cholesterol will convert into plaque, which thickens the blood, causes blood clot, and will eventually lead to strokes and heart attacks. Vitamin E from foods have also shown lesser risk of stroke for post-menopausal women.
Vitamin E is also well known for the benefits it gives to the skin. The topical use of Vitamin E helps retain moisture and prevents skin from drying, resulting to itchiness and lip chapping. It also protects the skin from ultraviolet light and heal wounds faster. Vitamin E is a main ingredient in most creams, lotions and sunscreens for topical application.
Vitamin E is also recommended for people with osteoarthritis. Having anti-inflammatory effects, Vitamin E is traditionally used to relieve arthritic pain and improves the mobility of joints.

Identifying Dog Worms and their Symptoms
There are 5 different types of dog worms (internal parasites), which your dog can fall prey to. These are: heartworm, hookworm, roundworm, tapeworm and whipworm. As a dog owner, I recommend that you educate yourself on these worms in order to be able to recognize the symptoms if they should become evident in your dog.
Early worm detection is important because each type of dog worm requires a different form of treatment. You should also be aware of the fact that roundworm and hookworm are zoonotic, which means that these worms can be transmitted to humans. Some worm infestations may show little to no symptoms, whereas others can demonstrate severe symptoms, such as vomiting, diarrhea and weight loss. Some dog worms can be seen by the naked eye while some cannot, therefore it is a good idea to ask your vet to perform a stool test for dog worms once a year.
Below you can find a list of common telltale symptoms of dog worm infestation, but keep in mind that these symptoms can also be a sign of a more serious problem. Either way, always consult a veterinarian whenever your dog is not "his usual self."
- Dull coat
- Weight loss
- Appetite loss
- Pot-bellied appearance
- Coughing
- Low energy level
- Diarrhea
- Vomiting
ROUNDWORMS (Toxocara canis, Toxascaris leonina)
There are two types of Roundworm: Toxocara canis and Toxascaris leonine. This is the most common type of dog worm, which affects the intestines and causes a pot-bellied appearance, mostly in puppies. There are a few ways puppies can become infected. Puppies are often infected before birth through the mother's uterus or through her milk. Puppies can also contract these worms through the ingestion of an infected animal (such as a rodent) or infected soil. Roundworm eggs can live in soil for many years. Once a puppy has ingested the infected soil, the eggs will hatch in his intestines, allowing the worms to live there and grow to adulthood. These adults will then produce more eggs.
Roundworms may be found in your dog's stool or vomit. They can grow to about 7 inches in length and have a spaghetti-like appearance. If this type of infestation is not detected early and is allowed a chance to develop, a buildup of worms in the intestines can cause an obstruction which may result in death. The symptoms of a severe infestation are: pot-belly appearance, diarrhea, vomiting, dull coat and weight loss.
Puppies should be dewormed every 2 weeks between 2 and 12 weeks of age, then monthly until he is 6 months old. Once your puppy has reached 6 months of age, he is less susceptible to contracting these worms but should continue yearly exams (or more often if considered high-risk).
Because Roundworm can be transmitted to humans, it is important to promote good hygiene, such as washing your hands regularly. Transmission of this dog worm to humans is usually through infected soil, which may be in your backyard or front lawn. Because the eggs are sticky and can easily adhere to hands or clothing, make sure children (and adults) wash their hands after playing outside (especially at a park or playground), after playing with the dog and before it's time to eat.
Treatment generally involves administering oral medication (dewormer) with follow-up fecal exams and a monthly heartworm medication. Try 1-800-PetMeds - America's Pet Health Resource
Prevent your dog from contracting roundworms by cleaning up fecal matter from the backyard as often as possible. Also, administering a heartworm medication such as HeartGard - Prescription Heartworm medication for Dogs & Cats is a good preventive. Do not mix wormers and consult your vet before giving your dog any medication. And last, but not least, always remember annual exams.
HOOKWORMS (Ancylostoma caninium)
Like Roundworm, Hookworm harbors in the intestines and can also be transmitted to humans. Hookworms can affect a dog at any age. It is a small, thin worm that hooks on to the intestinal wall and sucks the blood from its victim, which cause anemia and perhaps death. Due to their sharp teeth, they also cause bleeding in the intestines. Hookworms are not visible by the naked eye, therefore should be diagnosed by a vet. As with roundworm, hookworms also live and grow to adulthood in the intestines. They can also be transmitted to pups while in the mother's uterus or through her breast milk. A dog infected with hookworm would experience bloody stool, anemia, weight loss, pale gums, diarrhea and low energy level. Skin irritation can be a sign of a severe infestation.
Hookworms can be transmitted to humans by penetration of the skin, making it is possible for people to become infected simply by walking barefoot on infected soil. Hookworms, when transmitted to humans, can cause bleeding in the intestines along with abdominal pain and diarrhea.
Treatment usually consists of oral medications (dewormer), follow-up fecal exams, intravenous therapy and, if necessary, a blood transfusion. Hookworm infestation can kill your pup before the worm is ever detected. This is why it is so important to keep up with veterinary visits and exams.
TAPEWORMS (Dipylidium caninum)
The tapeworm gets its name from its long, flat, tape-like appearance. It is yet another parasite that affects the intestines, and like the roundworm, can be seen by the naked eye. Broke pieces of this dog worm would be found in the dog's fecal matter, which give it a rice-like appearance. These pieces of worm, although broken, can be found (still moving) around the dog's anus, in his stool or in his bed. Common symptoms of severe tapeworm infestation are abdominal pain, nervousness, severe itching around the anus, vomiting and weight loss.
Transmission to dogs is often caused by the ingestion of infected fleas. Although, humans are susceptible to being infected, a dog cannot transmit the dog worm to a human directly.
Regular over-the-counter deworming medication is not effective in eliminating this type of dog worm. A prescription dewormer is administered orally or by injection (praziquantel or epsiprantel). Consult your vet. Try 1-800-PetMeds - America's Pet Health Resource
WHIPWORMS (Trichuris vulpis)
Whipworms are long, thin (whip-shaped) dog worms that live in the dog's colon and are not visible by the naked eye. They attach themselves to the intestinal walls and feed off of them which, in turn, causes intestinal bleeding. Common symptoms of whipworm infestation are anemia, weight loss, flatulence, diarrhea with blood or mucus in the stool and lack of energy.
Although whipworms are the most difficult to eliminate among the families of dog worms, there is effective treatment available.
Whipworm is most effectively treated with fenbendazole (panacur), but febantel can also be used. Prescription medications are usually more effective. The treatment lasts for up to 5 days and is repeated after 3 weeks. After this treatment is finished, consult your vet about recommending a heartworm medication (containing milbemycin oxime) as a prophylactic to future infestation. Try 1-800-PetMeds - America's Pet Health Resource
Along with administering heartworm medication regularly, here are other ways to prevent reinfection:
- Remove feces from backyard every few days
- Clean yard with a safe cleaning agent (which kills worms)
- Have feces tested every 6 months (more often if previously infected)
HEARTWORMS (Dirofilaria immitis)
Heartworm, although highly preventable, has the potential to be fatal, if contracted and left untreated.
Heartworm is spread by mosquitoes, mostly during the warm months when mosquitoes are most active. The mosquito becomes infected from biting dogs that carry the disease. These dog worms destroy the muscle and tissue of the heart, which can cause congestive heart failure and result in death. At this advanced stage, your dog would experience the typical signs of worms, such as pot-belly, coughing, lack of energy and dull coat.
Unfortunately, there are no symptoms of this disease until it has progressed to an advanced stage. For this reason, it is important to start your dog on a heartworm preventative such as HeartGard - Prescription Heartworm medication for Dogs & Cats at 6 months of age (after the first stage deworming process is complete. Check with your vet). Prevention is the best medicine.
General guidelines for dog worm prevention
- When walking your dog in a park, picking up his feces as a standard practice not only prevents soil contamination, but also prevents the spread of many other dog diseases.
- Regular visits to the vet and stool testing is a great way to prevent dog worms, as well as other illnesses. Twice-yearly worm testing is recommended. Make sure your dog is tested for worms before starting a heartworm preventative.
- High-risk dogs should be screened more often (check with your vet).
- Flea control is important because fleas are responsible for the spread of tapeworms.
- Most puppies find feces quite appetizing. Keep your dog away from feces: his own as well as others. This is the most common form of worm infestation.
- When cleaning your dog's area, such as his bed or crate, spray it with a strong saltwater solution and let dry. This aids in the prevention of worms.
- Before traveling with your dog to obscure destinations, consult your vet of the potential risks to your dog.
- Avoid exposing your dog to stray animals, birds and dead rodents, which often harbor immature tapeworms that can mature inside your dog.
- Contact your vet if your dog displays any symptoms after receiving worm medication.

Average Price of LASIK Eye Procedure
LASIK eye surgery is great for people who are tired of wearing eye glasses and contacts everyday. But some people are considering it are afraid that the cost of this procedure is just too high for them to pay for.
The price for LASIK eye surgery can vary between the different providers and it can also be based on many different factors. Usually the provider will quote you a price that will be based per eye. That is because one treatment of LASIK procedure is only done on one eye. This doesn't mean that you won't fix both eyes in the same day. Just remember that the price you are quoted will need to be doubled if you are planning on correcting the vision in both eyes.
Surgeons performing the procedure might also tack on extra charges depending on whether or not they are using a newer technology for better precision. The most common new technology that they will use is IntraLase. During this LASIK procedure the surgeon will use a laser in place of a bladed instrument.
In 2008 analysts made a list of the average costs of LASIK surgery:
$1,662 for the non-customized LASIK in which the surgeon will use a bladded instrument and excimer lasers that are not guided by the use of wavefront analysis.
$2,105 for LASIK laser based vision correction where only a single price is quoted.
$2,341 for the LASIK procedure procedure where the surgeon will use IntraLase.
Keep in mind that there are wide variations that can be included in the price. There are some advertisements that will quote a great price - but will have hidden charges in the fine print. Very few people that are quoted an incredibly low price. Most will need more correction and follow up appointments after the original surgery.
But it seems that the cost of LASIK surgery is still becoming a bit more affordable then they were a few years ago. Reports show that in 2006 the average LASIK price was $1,950. In 2007 LASIK cost an average of $2,099 at a single price and with no extra charges. In 2008 the average cost did rise slightly to $2,105.
When comparing these prices of LASIK eye surgery to those in 2002 through 2005 ($1,550 - $1,965) you will notice that they are lower - but they do not include new technologies and more improved procedures. These new technologies make LASIK procedures more effective.
These are the average costs of LASIK surgery - but to understand completely how much the procedure will cost you should ask your local eye surgeon. They will understand your problem and inform you how many procedures you will need and how much you will need to pay for it.
LASIK Eye Surgery will help to correct your vision and make it so you no longer have to wear eye glasses and expensive contacts. Do your research and learn the Price Of LASIK Eye Surgery and the LASIK Eye Risks that can happen during and after the procedure.

How To Apply Eye Lash Extensions
The latest craze amongst celebrities is eye lash extensions. When done professionally eye lash extensions give you long lushes, beautiful lashes that look natural. Having beautiful lashes means you do not have to put on a lot of make-up to look great.
Eyelash extensions are a great way to enhance your eyes and your face. The longer and fuller your lashes are the more dramatic they look which in turn draws attention to your eyes. Eyelash extensions give you the impact look you are after.
Do It Yourself?
You have two ways to go when deciding to apply eye lash extensions. There is the do-it-yourself kit or the professional method. Both are good but the one you choose will depend on your budget and how confident you are at applying your own lashes.
It may be a good idea to have your first eye lash extensions applied by a professional so you can look and learn. Also if you have any burning questions they can be answered here. However, if you are confident in your own ability than there is no reason why you can't apply the lashes yourself but make sure you follow the instructions very carefully.
What are they made of?
Eye lash extensions can be made up of one of two different types of material. The more expensive and natural looking extensions are made up of real human hair.
The cheaper option and by no means inferior is lashes made up of synthetic products. There are different types of synthetic lashes and as the saying goes, 'you get what you pay for'. Look for a good quality product not the cheapest one you can find.
Most salons nowadays cater for the full beauty treatment from nails to hair to eyes. It is always a good idea to talk to your salon and see if they have a professional who can apply the lashes.
Who Will Do A Good Job?
If the salon has a professional who can provide the service find out which, eye lash extensions they have experience in. If they do not have a qualified eye lash extension technician they may be able to recommend someone. Either way find out how long they have been providing the service for and their level of experience in terms of the products they have worked with.
If you decide on a professional to apply your lashes the whole procedure can take anywhere between 1- 2hrs, it is painless and simple. Whilst the extensions are being applied ask all the questions you want so next time you can do it yourself.
If on the other hand you have decided to apply the lashes yourself than there is no need to panic as most kits comes with full instructions.
The most important part of applying the lashes yourself is applying the adhesive evenly so there are no clumping or uneven looking lashes. One of the best ways to apply the adhesive is to place some on a card and sweep the eyelash through to get an even coating.
Eyelash extensions are the latest craze made famous by the celebs. If applied correctly by a professional or yourself, you can have beautiful lashes for up to two months. These will give you the desired look of longer fuller lashes that draws people's attention to you and ladies isn't that what we want? to be worshiped

Glaucoma and the Optic Nerve
Glaucoma is a disease involving the optic nerve that affects the loss of retinal ganglion cells. If glaucoma is left untreated it will eventually lead to permanent damage of the optic nerve and then blindness. Glaucoma is caused most commonly by intraocular pressure on the nerves in the eye. A damaged visual field can never be fixed or recaptured. Glaucoma is a tricky disease because its progression is so slow. It can gradually wear down one's eyesight without the person noticing much of a difference and once the disease is detected; there isn't much a doctor can do to prevent it from getting worse, because it was detected at such a late stage.
People with ocular pressure, diabetes, and African American decent are three times more likely than others to develop Glaucoma. People that have a family history of Glaucoma have a six percent chance to develop the disease than people without a family history of it. The use of steroids has also been linked to the development of Glaucoma. Studies have also shown, in rare cases, that Glaucoma could be linked to hypertension (high blood pressure).
Glaucoma is usually diagnosed after a routine eye examination with an optometrist or ophthalmologist. The doctor will test the eye for changes in intraocular pressure, changes in the size or shape of the eye and an examination of the optic nerve. Glaucoma could also be examined by looking at the patient's background; their sex, race, history of drug use, refraction, inheritance and family history. The majority of treatments for Glaucoma is the continued use of eye drops to help lower the level of intraocular pressure.
There is yet to be a cure for Glaucoma but surgery is one way to treat the disease. The surgery will help to lower intraocular pressure by allowing fluid to leave the eye after a hole has been opened up in the meshwork. Surgery can be performed with a laser or conventionally. A patient could also undergo a canaloplasty. A canaloplasty is when the Schlemm Canal is opened, allowing fluids to flow freely, ultimately lowering the pressure of the eye. Glaucoma patients that don't respond to these normal treatments could look into Glaucoma drainage implants. This is the final option for patients if the eye does not respond to any other treatment. A flow tube is inserted in the eye to allow for fluid to flow out of the eye, thus lowering the intraocular pressure.
There are a handful of different stages of Glaucoma. They are primary, developmental, secondary and absolute Glaucoma. All of these stages develop over time and can eventually lead to blindness if the disease is not treated properly. Not all people with elevated pressure in the eye develop Glaucoma. Some patients of Glaucoma have developed the disease without elevated pressure in the eye. This could just be from their family history. In fact, the most common type of Glaucoma disease is hereditary. Everyone is at risk for the disease and in most cases there are little to no symptoms.

Is This Home Remedy For Pink Eye The Ultimate Cure?
Everyone who has had conjunctivitis (also known as pinkeye) has most likely wondered if there is an effective home remedy for pink eye. After all, it's no fun waiting in line for the doctor and filling prescriptions when you have such an embarrassment on your face! With so many children in daycare or preschool, the general lack of cleanliness in our society, and the unhealthy lifestyle habits we live by, it's no wonder pink eye is spread so easily. This article will explore why pink eye is such a persistent problem, and what we can do to prevent ourselves and our children from catching it.
Conjunctivitis is especially common in children because illnesses spread so quickly in daycares and schools. However, it's not just a problem that children have to endure. Many adults catch it from their children or end up with pink eye in some way or another. It is quite an embarrassing and uncomfortable infection, so many people are interested in learning about avoiding the spread of infection, and even using a home remedy for pink eye.
The best way solution for pink eye is to avoid catching and spreading it. Pink eye is very contagious, so it's sound advice to avoid infected persons, and avoid everyone if you have it yourself. Hand washing is mandatory. Make it a goal to wash your hands hourly if you feel you're at risk, such as is the case when caring for an infected person or when you have a cold. Disinfecting commonly used surfaces and washing your bedding thoroughly will help, but there are other precautions you can take, which I'll describe below.
Many people underestimate the importance of their diet and lifestyle. This careless attitude will lead to problems like pink eye (and worse) whether you like it or not. A healthy body is more resistant to infections and health issues than an unhealthy one. Exercising is a big help because it circulates oxygen, which ensures healthy tissues throughout your whole body. Improving your diet will also nourish your body, making conjunctivitis a rare occurrence.
The following foods are a great addition to any pink eye sufferer's diet: cucumber, tofu, eggs, clams, and water chestnuts. These foods are especially beneficial to eye health. Chamomile however, can work miracles and is an easy home remedy for pink eye. I suggest buying some pure chamomile tea bags and brewing yourself some tea. When the tea bag has cooled place it upon your infected eye and watch your pink eye improve steadily over the next 4-5 days.
As you can see, conjunctivitis can be controlled more easily than commonly thought. With a little effort focused on cleanliness and health, pink eye is becoming less and less common in my household. It used to be a problem for myself and my family, but I now have the knowledge to make it disappear whenever I wish. Eye Exams Without Dilation - The Optomap Retinal Exam
The optomap Retinal Exam provides a panoramic view of the back of a person's eye (the retina). The view provided by the optomap displays up to 80% of the retina without dilating the patient's eyes.
How Does the Optomap Work
The patient places their eye to be photographed up to the instrument and the doctor's assistant positions the patient for a photograph and takes the picture. The optomap captures its image in only 1/4 of a second. The photographer takes two photos and evaluates the images. If the images look good the same thing is repeated on the second eye. The image captured allows the doctor to view up to 80% of the retinal fundus at one time. The image may be magnified or manipulated for a better view. Written notes can accompany the image file should it need to be emailed to the patient or another doctor. Different wavelengths of laser light used to take the image can be filtered allowing different layers of the retina to be evaluated.
Why is This Better Than Dilation
The optomap is not necessarily better than dilation. The optomap Retinal Exam is a great tool to use in addition to dilation or when a patient can't, or does not want to be dilated.
In some cases the view provided by the optomap is superior to that of pupil dilation. For example, a patient that is very light sensitive will often refuse to have their pupils dilated because of the pain they experience due to the bright lights. The dilated view afforded the doctor of a very photosensitive patient is often poor because it is difficult for the patient to keep their eyes open or to look in the appropriate direction. The optomap captures an image with a brief flash that even light sensitive patients do not object to, allowing the to doctor view the results without discomfort to the patient. The optomap allows for a more comfortable retinal exam. The optomap can be used as a retinal health screening tool, allowing the doctor to focus the dilated retinal exam on areas that require a better view or further investigation.
When comparing the doctor's view of your eye through an undilated pupil, with an instrument called a direct ophthalmoscope, approximately 10% of the retinal fundus is viewable. However, to attain this view requires a cooperative patient with good fixation. A wider view is achieved, through a dilated pupils, with an instrument that is worn on the doctor's head called a binocular indirect ophthalmoscope (BIO). To attain this wider view, requires a cooperative patient, with good fixation and 20 minutes to allow the drops to dilate the pupils. The patient's eyes will remain dilated for 4 to 6 hours and they may experience some blurriness during that time. By having the patient look in different directions, while the doctor readjusts his or her light and a lens that they hold in their hand, the view given by the binocular indirect ophthalmoscope can be increased to almost 100% of the retinal fundus. One of the biggest advantages of a dilated retinal fundus exam with a binocular indirect ophthalmoscope is that it allows the doctor to see the fundus in 3D or a "stereo view". A good retinal camera will allow the examiner to see about 30% of the back of a patient's eye at one time. By taking numerous images and piecing them together up to 60% of the fundus is viewable with a retinal camera.
For Whom is the Optomap Recommended
The short answer is almost everyone is a good candidate for the optomap Retinal Exam. We find, however, that some of the best candidates for the optomap are those patients that can't or don't want to be dilated, children, anyone with a history of retinal problems and people that are light sensitive.
It is in the best interest of your ocular health to have a retinal eye health evaluation during your yearly eye exam that is more comprehensive than a traditional, undilated eye exam. Both the the optomap Retinal Exam and a dilated eye exam meet that standard.

Key Vitamins For Seniors You Need To Know About Now
This Vitamins for Seniors article is intended to provide seniors with the information they need to make educated vitamin choices possible. There are a lot of choices out there yet many lack the necessary information they need to good supplement choices. Seniors even more than others need to supplement their diet as they run the real risk of real inadequate nutrition.
As the body grows older, it needs even more life-giving vitamins to ward off disease, fight illness, as well as daily repair and maintenance.
That's one of the reasons why we wrote this vitamins for seniors page. Health professionals have proclaimed many seniors lack adequate nutrition by not eating as healthy as they should, but many also lack good digestion and assimilation.
Many also take too many prescription medications that demand much of the body often with terrible side effects. Many seniors live alone and make dietary compromises as well and the end result: nutritional deficiencies. That is why vitamins for seniors is so vital. The older you get, the more important nutrition becomes.
Can Vitamins Really Help Seniors?
To answer the question in the subheading, yes -- vitamins can help seniors IF they are taking assimilable vitamins and that is the key. Vitamins for seniors are especially critical as the older we become, the less efficient the body becomes. The senior needs vitamins not just for maintenance, but to strengthen his or her body's regenerative efforts for metabolism but also for daily energy. Also, the limited amounts of vitamins researchers say contributes to illness and degenerative diseases.
Vitamin K, for example, has been found to exist in low levels in Alzheimer's patients. Seniors need all vitamins but are there some vitamins that are more important? Yes and no. Seniors need all vitamins, which is why good supplementation is so critical to their daily diet. Some particular vitamins and minerals that are crucial are: Vitamins E, D, C, calcium, zinc, and the B vitamin complex.
Vitamins E, D, and C are known and powerful antioxidants, which antioxidants prevent free radical damage that lead to disease and aging. (Vitamin D isn't as powerful as C and E, but it's potent nonetheless.)
What Are The Best Vitamins for Seniors
Let's take the premise of "what are the best vitamins for seniors" a step further. Needless to say, senior health issues are different than those for the younger set. Seniors need good digestive health, good basic energy levels, good brain function, and good eyesight adequate enough to have a basic healthy life notwithstanding their diminished capacity due to age. Vitamins for seniors is important, but vitamins and minerals, though important, cannot do that alone.
There are some superstar nutrients that we'd like to discuss now to help educate you in your quest for better health. Of course, other factors are a part of good health such as diet and exercise, but nutritional adequacy is vital -- that is the basic point of this vitamins for seniors page.
Specialty Compounds for Seniors
When selecting an alternative nutritional supplement, look for specific compounds that are very powerful antioxidant substances. This is important for seniors. Remember, not all antioxidants have equal value. Yes, vitamins C and E are needed and you should take them daily, but there are also carotenoids like beta-carotene, selenium, bioflavonoids like quercitin (sometimes spelled quercetin) and hesperidin.
These can be supplied by a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables, but there are lesser known antioxidants like alpha lipoic acid, Gingko Biloba, Green Tea , L-Carnosine, N-Acetyl Cysteine, and Resveratrol. Let's discuss them one at a time now. First, the basics -- Vitamin D, E, and K before we talk about the special nutrients alluded to (these are, by the way, key vitamins for seniors).
Vitamin D
Vitamin D is often called the "sunlight vitamin" as it's produced by the body when the sun's ultraviolet rays hit the skin. It also has the distinction of being the only vitamin the body actually manufactures. It is also a fat-soluble vitamin essential for good teeth and bone health. It also helps to strengthen the immune system. The elderly don't usually get enough Vitamin D. Seniors between the age of 50 and 70 need 400 IU (international units) of it per day. If you're over 70, 600 IU per day.
Vitamin K
Seniors usually lack Vitamin K. It is essential for blood clotting and helps maintain and even enhance bone density. It plays a key role in preventing osteoporosis. We mentioned before that Alzhemier's disease and Vitamin K studies show have a common link -- Vitamin K levels are lower in carriers of the APOE4 gene, the gene that is a risk factor in Alzheimer's. Though not a antioxidant per se, it does prevent cell death. RDA for Vitamin K is 120 micrograms per day for senior men, 90 micrograms for senior women.
Vitamin E
Vitamin E is essential to good senior health. It is a fat soluble vitamin that has potent antioxidant properties thus preventing the oxidation of the fatty acids in the membranes of all cells. It slows aging. (Entertainer Bob Hope gave vitamin E credit for allowing him to live such a long life.) The RDA (Recommended international units (IU) for an adult is 22 IU (or about 15 mgs).
There are times when megadoses are given though when digestive mal absorption doesn't occurs. This can range from 100 IU to 200. The dosage prescribed for protection against coronary disease ranges from 400 to 800 IU per day. If you have any questions as to what you need and if you're aren't sure, consult with your doctor. Let's discuss now those Superstar Nutrients.
Alpha Lipoic Acid
Alpha-lipoic acid benefits include not just antioxidant capability, but it also helps the B vitamins produce more energy from proteins, carbs, and fats. This is one of the unknown yet very capable vitamins for seniors you should know about. Studies also show alpha-lipoic acid supplements help prevent complications from diabetes but it also helps in the treatment of many diversified health issues including, glaucoma, even liver problems cirrhosis -- HIV infection. It helps slow aging-- something of interest to all, including seniors.
Gotu Kola
Gotu Kola is another popular memory enhancer that finds its way in a myriad of memory supplements or memory pills. As with Gingko Biloba, the authors can personally testify as to its efficacy. Due to its capability to enhance memory and as a nerve tonic, among other capabilities, Gotu Kola has been called "food for the brain." Interestingly enough, Gotu Kola is a favorite food among elephants perhaps explaining the saying, "A memory like an elephant."
Gingko Biloba
A Vitamins for Seniors web page wouldn't be complete without mention of Ginkgo Biloba. Gingko Biloba comes from a tree species that is literally one of the oldest trees on earth. This powerful antioxidant helps improve circulation, fights coronary disease, and helps improve and correct brain-centered activity by improving oxygen levels in the brain. It even helps in eliminating impotence and in lessening the effects of Alzheimer's disease. For good effect, take 30 to 60 mg twice a day.
Green Tea Extract
Green Tea possesses powerful antioxidants called polyphenols that studies suggest are even more potent than vitamins C and E to destroy cancer-causing free radicals. This is one of the most potent vitamins for seniors or foods in the world, in our opinion. Among its many therapeutic benefits, Green Tea has also been shown to have very promising results regarding preventing prostate cancer. A study conducted by the respected Mayo Clinic found that "the main polyphenol in Green Tea, which is EGCG, inhibits the growth of prostate cancer cells and in high concentrations destroys them." Its affects don't apply only to men. In a study reported in the American Journal of Epidemiology July 1996, a study of 35,000 post-menopausal Iowa women showed that those "who drank two or ore cups of tea daily were less likely to develop cancers of the urinary or digestive tract." Look for 25 to 100 mg of green tea extract for best effect.
L-Carnosine
Carnosine is an active antioxidant antiaging substance that is produced by the body by the enzyme carnosine synthetase. It supports cellular rejuvenation by working on both glycosylation and free radical damage. Glycosylation is the oxidation of proteins by glucose (blood sugar) that results in the cross linking of proteins that are in turn implicated in the loss of cell function, genome integrity and aging. Look for a supplement that has 50 to 150 mg of it for optimum effect.
N-Acetyl Cysteine
N-Acetylcysteine has shown the ability in clinical studies to actually improve the autoimmune system while simultaneously preventing cellular damage and thus aging. It also is a potent protector to environmental toxins like secondhand cigarette smoke, herbicides, even some chemicals. It is a powerful oxidant when taken at the 35 to 150 mg recommended level.
Resveratrol
Found in red wine and grape juice (among other sources), Resveratrol is a powerful antioxidant that studies have shown eliminates free radical damage linked to many cancers. It also has robust anti-inflammatory properties. Regarding its anti-cancer capability, it actually combats cancer at all three steps: initiation, promotion, and progression.
Resveratrol also possesses remarkable cholesterol lowering ability. Its antioxidant properties also has the ability to reduce the oxidation of LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol). Lastly, look for a supplement that has 25 to 40 mgs of it for best effect.
Tips on The Best Vitamins for Seniors
Vitamin supplementation for seniors is a necessity, not a luxury. Choosing a multivitamin, the best multivitamin, is difficult. So many claim their product is superior yet dietary supplement fraud is rampant. Literally 1 in 5 supplement manufacturers don't even have the proclaimed ingredients on the label in the supplement! Furthermore, the threat of contaminants is real.
Key Tips on Selecting the Best Vitamins for Seniors
1. The supplements should be produced at pharmaceutical standard GMP registered facilities. Facilities that are GMP registered comply with the most rigid standards so as to minimize the possibility of product contaminants. (These are the same standards pharmaceutical companies in the United States are required to operate under as mandated by the FDA.)
Nutritional supplements are not regulated by FDA and as such fraud is rampant with many so-called supplements containing contaminants with 1 in 5 not having the ingredients as proclaimed on the label!
2. Ensure the supplement manufacturer has a Certificate of Analysis (COA) on file for review by you the customer thus confirming the potency of the herbal ingredients listed on the label.
3. Look for vitamin tablets that have enteric coating. Enteric coating ensures the safety of the tablet while in the stomach so it's not destroyed by stomach acids. Enteric coating preserves the ingredients until they pass into the upper intestine where they are then assimilated into the blood stream.
4. Vitamins for seniors that have herbal compounds should be contain standardized herbal extracts. Standardized extracts contain the active ingredients, the potency, of the herb.
It's expensive to do this, which is why most vitamin makers don't do this. By selecting vitamins for seniors that meet this criteria, you're ensuring you're getting high quality, pharmaceutical grade vitamins-- the best vitamins for seniors.

Benefits of Corneal Collagen Crosslinking With Riboflavin
Corneal Collagen Crosslinking with Riboflavin or (C3-R) is a relatively new treatment. In past decades surgeons would have to perform a corneal transplant to improve the vision of keratoconus patients. Now they have developed a new treatment that helps strengthen the cornea and stop the damage that keratoconus patients could suffer from this progressive disease.
The Treatment Application-
C3-R is directed under the epithelial cell layer. Located on the surface of the cornea. The surgeon will apply anesthesia drops on the surface of the eye. Then disrupt the epithelial cell layer. So the Riboflavin eye drops will penetrate the stromal portion of the cornea, which is the layer under the epithelium. The Riboflavin drops are then placed on the surface of the cornea. A small UVA light is shone over the eye for about 30 minutes to activate the solution. The procedure is relatively comfortable if the epithelium layer is only disrupted rather than removed. Some surgeons removed the layer, which makes the first week of the procedure uncomfortable. Be sure to check with your doctor to see if they perform the epi-on or epi-off technique.
There are several benefits of Corneal Collagen Crosslinking below are a few:
Strengthens the cornea with less evasive procedures- The solution will improve the strength of the cornea over 3-6 months after treatment. It only requires a one time application. And there are less risks associated with C3-R as appose to corneal transplant.
Can be combined with INTACS to reverse damage to the cornea- C3-R treatment can be mixed with INTACS reduce the cone shape of the cornea. After the 3 year follow up doctors found that it stopped the increase of cornea curvature values and flattened the mean cone.
C3-R Stabilizes Progressive Ectasia- C3-R can give some relief from Progressive Ectasia. It has been proven to stabilize progressive Ectasia. While it is not a complete cure there are high hopes for further treatments of Ectasia.
The benefits of C3-R many. Surgeons are further studying and researching C3-R and INTACS. Without question medical sciences are growing rapidly. And each day we are improving the treatments for Keratoconus and other troubling diseases. There is no need to suffer with Keratoconus. Patients now have a wide array of treatments to help them with the progression of this condition.
Keratoconus patients no longer need to despair, find hope: http://www.keratoconusinserts.com

LASIK Eye Surgery - Are You a Good Candidate?
Both the medical community and potential patients must maintain a careful and conservative definition of what a "good LASIK candidate" is, in order to ensure the long-term success of the procedure. Regardless of its current popularity, laser eye surgery will become a victim of its own fame if people unlikely to get good results are allowed to undergo the procedure based purely on their desire for improved vision. Make sure the decision you make is right for you, and that statistics for a terrific outcome are in your favor before you undergo any kind of refractive surgery.
General Requirements
Some prerequisites for LASIK involve your general health and physical condition. You should be at least 18 years of age and in generally good health, particularly free of eye diseases such as cataracts. Certain health problems, such as uncontrolled diabetes or autoimmune diseases (like lupus or HIV), compromise your health and thus compromise your chances of a good surgical outcome. Patients should not be pregnant or nursing at the time of surgery because pregnancy hormones can cause fluctuations in your vision prescription.
Ocular Requirements
If you have dry eye syndrome, you are not a good LASIK candidate, as the procedure can make the symptoms of this disease considerably worse. Your vision must be stable, with little or no change in your prescription for at least the previous year. During that same year, you should not have had any eye infections or injuries. You must have no history of herpes infection in the eye, as the surgery may bring about a recurrence of herpes. You must have no scarring on your corneas, so glaucoma patients may not make good candidates. If you have asymmetric corneas, keratoconus, really bad vision, or corneas that are too thin, you are not a good candidate.
Also, the procedure is generally best to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. It can not (yet) deal well with presbyopia, the natural vision issues that come with aging. There are specialized LASIK surgeries that are intended to deal with presbyopia, but these options are not for everyone. Depending on your age, be sure to discuss presbyopia with your surgeon , in terms of its current or future implications for your vision.
Knowledge Requirements
You must understand the risks involved with any surgery and with this procedure in particular, in order to have realistic expectations regarding your possible outcomes. Any good laser eye surgeon will require that you not only meet the general prerequisites of a good surgical candidate but that you also have an eye examination with an ophthalmologist to confirm your candidacy. He or she will also examine whether you have dry eyes disease or the early signs of it, talk and explain about the risks, benefits, and alternatives to LASIK surgery, and define other issues that may qualify or disqualify you as a good candidate.
Other Options
If your procedure of choice turns out not to be right for you, surgeons will likely offer other procedures that can treat your refractive errors. Given the ongoing and rapid advances in laser eye surgery technology, many people are now good LASIK candidates who previously did not qualify. Depending on the reasons that you don't currently qualify, you may find that in a few years, the technology has caught up with your issues. These days, patients for whom the procedure wasn't appropriate a few years ago find that they are now ideal for the latest Wavefront Custom LASIK procedures.
Alternatively, many nearsighted or farsighted patients who are not good LASIK candidates can receive the same visual benefits by undergoing the LASEK procedure instead. Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) is another alternative. If you feel that you can't afford laser eye surgery, are unwilling to risk a surgical procedure, or have unusual vision needs, a non-surgical option such as continuous wear contacts may be right for you.
Conclusion
Only an eye surgeon who has examined you in person can tell you for certain whether you're a good LASIK candidate. Be sure to arrange a pre-operative consultation with an ophthalmologist or refractive surgeon in order to undergo a thorough exam and determine whether the surgery is right for you. These consultations are very often free of charge, and they're critical to helping you make the right decision with your visual future.

Are You Suffering From Dry Eye Syndrome?
Do you spend long hours in front of you computer screen? Do your eyes itch or burn? You may be experiencing dry eye syndrome. Dry eye syndrome is also referred to as "computer eye syndrome". Dry eyes are caused by insufficient tearing. This occurs mostly in seniors, but more and more doctors are seeing younger patients due to their heavy computer use. In this article we will review the causes and potential treatments for dry eye syndrome.
One the most common culprits of dry eyes is continuous dry air from air conditioning and heating equipment. This dry air aggravates your eyes by drying them out. Due to the fact that you have insufficient tearing, this will affect you more than most.
The dry eyes syndrome is most common in women, especially those suffering from menopause. It is estimated that up to 10 million Americans have been diagnosed with dry eye. This number has move than doubled over the last ten years. More than likely due to heavy computer use. High risk careers at risk for dry eye are accountants, software engineers, assistants and customer service reps.
Some of the symptoms are:
· Redness or Eye Fatigue
· Sand feeling in your eyes
· Burning feeling in your eyes
Most of those suffering do not develop more complications but it is possible to experience cornea damage if left untreated. Other infections can occur as well as your eyes are not creating enough tears to keep them moist. Other possible side effects if left untreated are glaucoma and other vision issue.
What is the treatment for my dry eyes?
If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms you should start by buying over the counter "artificial tears" to keep your eye most. If that does not help, you will need to visit your eye doctor. More than likely they will prescribe you a topical steroid to put on your eyes. This is the first step in treating your dry eye discomfort.
If you are already experiencing infections or other vision related issues, your doctor may recommend a plug in your tear duct. These work by acting causing more tears to pool in your eyes. This is only done In very extreme circumstances.
Other possible solutions before you visit your doctor are:
· Try blinking more often. This is especially true if you use a computer for long periods of time.
· Try using a humidifier to moisturize the air. For many suffers this helps as the problem is related to dry air from the heating or air conditioning system.
· Drink more water. Make sure you aren't suffering from dehydration.
· Take your vitamins. Make sure you take your Vitamin A and fatty omega-3 vitamins. These support your eye health as you age.
The good news is that there are effective treatments for dry eye. Try some of our suggestions and you might find that a doctor visit isn't necessary.
